The group gecko-art was founded in 1993. The focus of the group's activities is the creation of programs for theatre acting and projects involving elements of sounds, voice play and language. In practice gecko-art carries out workshops, theatre games and audiovisual events together with children and young people. Furthermore, art objects are built for games ('gecko-art-objects') where they are set up in public spaces. Evelyn Blumenau develops the workshop conception and is the chief advisor during the workshops. She is an actress working with independent theatre groups. She is the singer of the Austrian avangarde-popband  NOVI SAD. Walter Kreuz creates projects and new nethods for getting closer to art and literature by means of installations and game objects. He is an artist and performer of interactive events concerning art and literature.

In 2002 gecko-art was winner of the "Hans Czermak-Award" for contributions in order to establish a society free from violence.

The gecko-art  events are performed in schools (grammar schools, secondary schools), libraries, museums, galleries in cooperation with cultural organisations, culture youth centres, European Fund for Regional Development of the EU and much more. gecko-art presented and carried out its projects and methods on tour, as part of cultural cooperations and conferences in Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, in the Czech Republic, in the Slowak Republic, and in Latvia (Art Hall Mücsarnok Budapest, several bilingual grammar schools at the Slowak Republik and at Hungary, State Museum Riga, Art Museum Lodz, Central Marionette Theatra Sofia, Laboratory of Creative Animation Warsaw a.m.m.)
